The Stained Glass Art
of Peter Sterling

I fell in love with the shimmering beauty of stained glass when I was six years old. Every Sunday my mother would go to church and I would go to Sunday school with the rest of the kids. One Sunday my mother decided to take me along with her and her best friend to the regular service. As I sat between my mother and her friend I was transfixed by the ceremony of the Episcopal priests as they would burn incense and sprinkle holy water in there colorful vestments. I remember looking up at the magnificent stained glass windows that depicted various episodes from the life of Christ. A beam of light shone thru the window closest to us flooding the church with a beautiful rainbow of color. I had never seen anything like that before. At that moment I looked up at my mother and her friend and said "when I grow up I want to be a stained glass window maker". My mother smiled and put her arm around me. As the service continued I stared at the window and the beautiful color that came thru it. I believe at that moment I was touched by the holy spirit and god heard my prayer to be a glass craftsmen.

---It was ten years later when I was in high school that I went into the career counseling office on campus to look for a part-time job on the bulletin board. I remember looking at the board with all the 3x5 cards when one of them seemed to jump off the board. It said "stained glass studio needs assistant". Although I hadn't given stained glass much thought over the last ten years all of a sudden a vision of the time in the church came into my mind and I remembered my request to god. I called the studio and went over for an interview. I was hired on the spot and that started a one year period where I became an apprentice to a master stained glass craftsmen that showed me everything about the craft of stained glass. Shortly after that I went off to college and had to put glass on the back burner for another ten years. Then in my 27th year I moved into a cabin in the hills of Colorado that had a wonderful room where I built the art studio I always dreamed of. From that point on glass has been a part of my life.

---I primarily do geometric or Mandela designs which seem to focus energy and aid in meditation. Each piece is custom designed for the person who commissions it. I tune into their energy and ask to receive their pattern and colors. All my windows have inlaid crystal and gemstones that magnifies and enhances the overall beauty of the pieces. My windows hang in private residences and healing centers all over the country.
